Nicosia Cyprus south part
South part of Nicosia, this walk takes in the main shopping street of Nicosia and some of the histrical points of interest. allow one hour longer if the archaeological museum is visited. Start laiki yitania just inside the city walls.
Lakiki yitania
This area of city has been restored very saccessfully to provide several pedestrianised streets of craft shops, traditional restaurants and tourist office. Turn on ippocratous street the main pedestrianised street of laiki yitania, to find the leventis museum.
Leventis museum
This is new museum with exhibits which tell the history of Nicosia, By cypriot standars it is very sophisticated. museum employing videos and other modern technology. It has three floors of interest : the first floor covers the citys early history up until Turkish. theground floor more recent British rule to independence; and there are some medival artefacts in the basemant. procceed toward onasagoras street and turn right. continue into phaneromeni street and eventually reach phaneromeni church supposedly the biggest in Nicosia. turn left just before the church and then left again into ledra street.
Ledra and Onasagoras Street
These narrow streets were once manin shopping areas of Nicosia. They were still attract large numbers of people to their bustling narrow pavements. they are lined by a wide range of shops. The most notable are those selling cloth which is stacked in rolls outside the shops. continue to the top end of ledra street where is meets eleftheria square.
Eleftheria Square
this is a busy place linked with kiosk on one side and bastion of the city walls on the other. It is very much the hearth of the city standing as the gateway between the old and the new. turn right here to keep inside the city wallks on pantelides avenue and then left in dianysos solomos square which serves as the main bus station. From here cross over the walls and turn right into homer avenue and then head straight on, passing the American cultural centre and the Cyprus museum. At the second set of lights turn right into museum avenue. The museum entrance is on the right.
Cyprus Museum
This houses one of the finest collections of archaeological trasures in the Mediterranean. The firstexhibitis are objects from the Neolithic period, including a wall painting of a man with his hands up. next comes the Bronze age followed by artefacts from the classical Greek period. At the end of the room 4 is perhaps the most impressive display : a whole case of steatite idols arranged as they were found in a sanctuary at Ayia irini. the remaining rooms pass through the various periods of history. Be sure not to be miss salamis treasure in a room upstairs. turn right out of the museum and cross the road to the municipal theatre and gardens.
MUNICIPAL GARDENS
Well-watered gardens full of trees, flowers, a few ponds and a small collectionof sad-looking birds.
return to museum street and turn left to reach raundabout at the bottom. take the third exit, over which a UN flag flies.
PAPHOS GATE
The used to be one of the main gateways into the city through the walls but it has fallen into disrepair. turn uphill keeping close to the walls passing the fire station and eventually emerging back at eleftheria sqare.
