Agia Napa Harbour has had a complete facelift renovation, making it one one of the three key landmarks of Agia Napa which also includes the monastery and Cape Greco.

Colourful and typically picturesque the Harbour has built an open-air theatre, fountains and cobble stoned pathways  rwith quaint cafes and restaurants  that overlook the Mediterranean.  Fishing boats and fisherman dot the landscape with a quiet, restful atmosphere that bathes  the mind and the spirit.

Agia Napa Harbour is also the venue for celebration and festivity throughout the year, especially during Kataclysmos in June when folk music, performers, dancers and fireworks are the usual fare for tourists and local alike. A time of fun and laughter for all, the harbour is a charming romantic background for these festivities. The Agia Napa Harbour is a great place to enjoy lunch or dinner and bask the sun or moonlight.

DIVING IN CYPRUS

Diving in

Whilst many dream of relaxing on the beach or stretching out by the hotel pool, an increasing number of people see their holiday as the time to try out a new sport. Water sports are very popular in Cyprus and good weather, regular onshore winds and warm sea temperatures mean they can be enjoyed all year round.

There are all types of water sports available from the traditional favourites like sailing and windsurfing to the comparatively new ones of parascending and kite surfing. But the water sport that remains the perennial favourite is scuba diving.

The first leisure dive centres were established 30 years ago and CYDive in Pafos was the first to gain PADI IDC five-star accreditation. Today, there are several dive centres in each of the main beaches resorts and they are all affiliated to either BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club)or PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) . The courses offered by both are internationally recognised and many can be comfortably fitted into a two week holiday!  There are courses for beginners, children and experienced divers as well as a variety of shore boat dives including popular night dives.

The `Shore Diver` course is an ideal introduction to scuba diving and enables the diver to dive to a depth of 12 metres accompanied by a professional diver of course.

The next step in the `open water` qualification which enables the diver to go to a depth of 18 metres. This entails five theory modules plus five sessions ina swimming pool and for more in open water. For children aged eight and upwards, there are some great introductory sessions and these include dives in a swimming pool wearing all the scuba gear!

The waters around Cyprus are beautifully clear with visibility of 10-40 metres and ,coupled with the good weather, this attracts regular visits from a growing number of overseas clubs. Cyprus has more than 50 different dive sites- including the wreck of the zenobia, which is ranked amongst the top ten in the world . many people travel to Cyprus just to explore this wreck.

There are many other wrecks to explore around the island, each one different from the other but attract a variety of marine life.

There are also several good underwater cave systems and reefs to explore. The best known are the Amphorea Caves which were given this name because of the old red clay storage jars embedded in the roof! The Jubilee Shoals (Pafos) is a challenging dive as there is an underwater cliff with a cave and tunnels, whilst the white River dive site is a playground of underwater holes chimneys and gullies. The highlight of this underwater system in the `The Cathedral`- a large cave archway where the sunlight streams down through the water from the blow hole behind.

Several of the dive sites are popular because of their abundance of marine life.  Wall street(25m) is a fun dive because it is a narrow gully with sea sponges, anemone and corals to admire as well as shoals of small silver-coloured fish. The Mismaloya Reef off the Paphos coast is the place to see plenty of bream, rays,  parrotfish, starfish and sea urchins.

Certainly, if you have never tried diving then seize the opportunity because the dive sites around the island of Cyprus have so much to offer.
