Limassol is preparing for the annual prestigious event of the wine Products Council’s 6th Cyprus wine competition, a landmark event that is held under the patronage of the international organisation of vine and Wine (OIV).
The event is now seen as the cornerstone celebration of the emerging new era of quality Cyprus wines. The tastings will take place during April 13-15 in Limassol and Paphos and will culminate an April 16 at the official Gala dinner award ceremony to be held at the Le Meridien Resort and Spa in Limassol.
The competition is a significant event for the island’s wine producers since it communicates the value and growing popularity of Cypriot wines. It has received extensive media coverage in the past, and has proven to help create both local and international awareness of the upgraded quality and new accomplishments of local wine producers, who are now raising their standards as they have to compete in the more challenging international arena with changing trends and techniques.
This year 34 Cypriot wine producers have submitted 163 wines for tasting and tasting for the coveted honour of the Gold Medal (last year 162 wines competed).
The competition is seen as a cornerstone of the emerging new era of Cyprus wines. It provides a challenge to the local wine makers and a means to enhance the competitive performance of the sector at the same time it highlights the growing awareness of the quality advances in wine making techniques during recent years. According to Georgios Kasianos. President of the Cyprus Sommelier Association, who regularly offers wine testing seminars both locally and internationally , the Cyprus wine industry is making progress “although the process has been slow but steady.”
The categories of wines will include dry, semi dry and semi sweet wines, with wine varieties from Nicosia ,Paphos and Limassol protected geographical regions , as well as Comandaria varieties , all taking part .at the press conferences held to announce the competition , its brand new website was also unveiled Currently developed in English (the site will be translated into Greek in time), the competition can be followed alongside an informative guide to the history of wine making in Cyprus and the Council itself.
