During 2011, the Cyprus Science Festival will promote science communication and education in the Mediterranean area. A number of science and technology trailblazer events will take place islandwide, giving people of all ages the opportunity to take part.
The Science Festival team has been working since May 2010 to bring a domefestival to Cyprus. this exciting and unique event will take place at the American Academy in Larnaca from march 18 to 21. The Domefestival is a new idea in Cyprus , it screens full-dome films usually shown in science centres, IMAX big screens and planetariums. A film shown in a cinema is projected onto a flat surface in front of the audience. A filldome film is an image projected on to a 360 curved surface, the entire roof of the cinema is filled with images and sound, giving the term “immersive cinema”, where the audience is surrounded by imagery.
The Domefestival begins at 9am on Friday , March 18 when visitors can browse vendor stalls and domes . a welcome address will be given by Sotira Trifourki, the Domefestival Director, and Tom Widdows, Director of the Amarican Academy of Larnaca. There will be film screenings and discussions during the day including an open discussion from 11:30-12:20 entitled “Science and Innovation in the Medfiterranean “. The session aims to bring an open discussion between participants from a wide range of fields including immersive theatre, film, planetariums, education, culture and the arts, on the current situation within the Mediterranean area. Future projects and opportunities for cooperation will also be discussed.
From 2.30pm until 3.30 pm. Dan Neafus will demonstrate and discuss “The Language of Immersive Cinema”.
Tickets for each day are euro15, a four day pass is available for euro40.
