All set for State Fair-Cyprus

Now in its 36th year, the Cyprus international Fair opens its doors in Nicosia promising visitors plenty to see and do.

President Demetris Christofias will officially open the Fair at 7.30pm tonight and it will remain on until Sunday, May 15.

The Fair provides the perfect opportunity for the public to see a wide range of products and  services offered by Cypriot companies and foreign businesses with a presence on the island.

Taking part are 120 exhibitors representeting more than 1,000 companies from Cyprus and 123 foreign countries.

Greece, USA, Spain, Cameroon, Kuwait, South Africa, Palestine, Poland, Romania and Syria will also be participating with their own pavilions.

In line with a policy introduced over the last few years, Kuwait has been named this year`s honoured country.Authority chairman Loizou Constantinou said this choice was not accidental, but confirmed Cyprus` role as a bridge between Europe and the Middle East.

Constantinou also said that despite the economic recession with its far-reaching global effects, this year`s Fair has broadened its horizons on all levels.

The state Fairs Authority Chairman also announced a new practice, that of honouring a municipality at every event: “The first Municipality to be honoured will be an occupied one, Lapithos Municipality. For ten days the Fair grounds will be filled with the lemon blossoms of Lapithos and ring with the sounds of Lapithos bands. Lapithos Municipality events will be presented at Pavilion 8.”

Pavilion 3, meanwhile, will host the CYTOUR Domestic Tourism or `Holiday in Cyprus` exhibition giving visitors the opportunity to find out more about the many choices of Cyprus holiday packages available to them this summer. A significant addition to this year`s event is the Police Pavilion which will also include a display of the new police helicopter.

The 2nd Beer Festival has also been organised within the Fair. This will be held from tomorrow, Saturday, May 7 until the May 15 close of the entire Fair, while young visitors should especially enjoy the new `Children`s Village.`

Music fans should note that there will be a free concert by popular Greek band Onirama at the Fair ground at 9.30pm on Wednesday, May 11.

Live musical entertainment will also be available every evening throughout the Fair including well-known local DJs and bands as well as internationally known flamenco dancer Lola Perez and New York`s own Chris Byars and Ari Roland Sextet.

Costantinou thanked the Commerce, Tourism and Industry Ministry which subsidised Fair participation by up to 70% or 2,500 Euro.

“This programme encouraged many Cypriot industries to take part in exhibition. This type of programme strengthens the country`s commercial and financial activity,” he said.

The Cyprus International Fair will be open from 6-11pm on weekdays and Sundays and until midnight on Saturdays. There is 5 Euro entrance fee, while children get in for free as do members of the Cyprus Five Member Families Organisation.
