The Paphos Aphrodite Opera Company has announced that the National Theatre of Prague will stage a production of `The Tales of Hoffman` by Jacgues Offenbach at this year’s autumn festival.
The performance will take place on September 2,3 and 4 at the Mediaeval Castle in Paphos.
The festival is now in its 13th year with ambitious plans already afoot for the 2012 opera which will coincide with Cyprus’EU Presidency.
`The Tales of Hoffman` premiered in Paris in 1881, a few months after the death of the composer and has remained a popular opera produced internationally.
Offenbach himself was one of the biggest composers of operetta and music comedy in the 19th century.
The imagination of German poet E.T.A Hoffmann, who wrote fairytales in the beginning of the 19th century provided remarkable material for the composer from which he created `The Tales of Hoffman` masterpiece.
In the story, the young poet Hoffman is in love with the singer Stella, while he is beign claimed by the Muse who wants him deny all human passions and devote himself to art. Stella sends him a note with a servant inviting him to her dressing room but the servant is bought off by a city official, who is also an admirer of Stella’s and gives him the note.
