The police have completed a feasibility study for the installation of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in strategic locations around Cyprus to deter crime in town centres, main streets and other public areas.
Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou said Cyprus was not just the only country in the EU27 to not operate a public CCTV system but the only country in Europa.
“It is unacceptable that our town squares, parks and other busy public places that are vulnerable to crime are not being monitored ,” said Papageorgiou.
The police have already contacted Personal Data Protection Commissioner Youlla Frangou to clarify that the project was in compliance with privacy laws.
After having studied the matter Frangou concluded that CCTV monitoring in authorised locations would not violate the public’s right to privacy and gave the go ahead for the venture to continue.
Police Spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said the next step was to evaluate the cost of the project and then to obtain funds from the state budget to finance it.
!As system of this type is primarily a precaution to safeguard the public from any criminal act. As it records footage continuously it will be a useful tool for helping the police solve past crimes and will also act as a deterrent for potential offenders,” said katsounotos.
The police have selected a number of locations where the security cameras will be installed, including all major town centres and highway exit points. The system will be viewed 24 hours a day by police operators and will aim to prevent burglaries, antisocial behaviour and more serious crimes.
