The fourth international cyptess Classic Car Rally was a huge success, with more than 40 classic cars taking part.
The rally was organised by well-known Turkish Cypriot garage owner and classic car enthusiast Tamer Konat , who runs the Tamco Garage in Kyrenia(Girne)
Mr.Konat said : “This is the only truly international car rally in the whole of Cyprus and it is very important event to us.
“This year we have had couples from the UK taking part, and drivers from Turkey as well , including the globally known classic car collector Cengiz Antam.”
Mr Konat set up the Classic and Sports Car Club of Northern Cyprus in 1992 , along with Cetin Gurcag and the club now boasts more than 300 members.
Although he was not taking part on this occasion, his staff at the garage were busy preparing back-up technical teams for the race.
The rally starting point was the Onar Holiday Village in Kyrenia(Girne) on Sunday morning finishing 160 km later at Bedi’s restaurant near the Salamis hotel famagusta , where the prize-giving also took place .
The prize for the oldest vehicle taking part in the rally went to Gunes Mentes who drove his 1952 Wolseley 15/50 and had the honour of being the first car away at 10am .
Mr Konat added : “it is good to see the event is growing and improving every year , with more young people getting involved”.
Co-organiser Colin Moles runs a business based in Essex, called Classic Travel , which specialises in providing worldwide holidays and vehicle movement to events for motoring enthusiasts . he also organises trips from the UK for people who wish to enter the rally.
This year he organised an eight-day trip to the rally for 14 people , with six couples entering the event.
Mr Moles , 62, who owns an apartment bin Girne(Kyrenia)said:` I pop over for a month each year from Chelmsford , along wit my wife , Chris , in between organising events in the UK and across Europe.
“We love the island and the hospitality.
“In classic car circles an automobile is a veteran if it is dated pre-1909, vintage if it is post-First World War , and a classic if it is more than 25 years old . they are , however , trying to change the standard for a classic car as pre-1986.”
One couple who travelled with classic Travel, Mike and Pat Crone , from Basildon in Essex said: “This is the second time we have taken part in the rally and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
“For the organisers to conduct a rally of this standard , even lending us the cars to participate , is fabulous.
The Cypress Classic Car Rally was a very professional affair.”
