Cyprus First Activate Protocol On Enhanced Protection
Cyprus became the first country together with Italy to activate the Second protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention for the enhanced protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict under UNESCO auspices.
Three UNESCO Cultural Heritage sites in Cyprus, namely Neolitic Chirokitia, the two Paphos sites(Mosaics ,Aphrodite’s Sanctuary) and the painted churches of Troodos now qualify to put up the Blue Shield sign symbolising the enhanced status. In Italy the site chosen was the commune of Castel del Monte, dating from the 13th century.
The development took place at the 5th Session of the Protocol Committe- called the International Committee of the Blue Shield (ICMS)- held in late November headquarters in Paris.
“This is of great benefit to Cyprus, since it not only highlights the importance of the island’s cultural heritage, but also shows that the Republic is capable of taking action to protect its monuments, as well as those of the world at large,”
