Cyprus Hotel Rates `Among Cheapest` In EU
Cyprus is among the cheapest European destination when it comes to hotel rates, Commerce Minister Antonis Paschalides said this week.
Paschalides told MPs at the House Commerce Committee that the latest EU report reverses Cyprus’s negative picture as a destination with expensive hotels. Cyprus is now among the 10 cheapest EU countries with regards to hotel rates ,he said.
Messages from key markets such as Russia, Germany, Scandinavia and Greece are encouraging, he said.
“With easier visa procedures, the improvement of our airports and other services we are cautiously optimistic that there will be no drop in arrivals this year and they will hover at last year’s levels, “said Paschalides.
House Commerce Committee chairman Lefteris Christoforou warned of hard times ahead stressing the need for a coordinated effort to attract more tourist in 2010.
Diko’s Angelos Votsis stressed the need to publicise the fact hotels were offering cheap rates, whileEdek’s Yiorgos Varnava believes that Cyprus is worse off than other competitive destinations despite government efforts to attract more visitors.
“We must focus on reversing the picture of Cyprus being expensive destination,”he said.
