The 9th international `Cyprus Film Days` film festival opens tonight and will screen of some of the year’s most important film until Sunday, April 17.
According to its organisers , the cultural Services and Rialto Theatre the festival aims to celebrate contemporary international cinema and establish, through its activities, channels of communication between the Cypriot public and global independent film production.
Screening are being held at Rialto Theatre in Limassol and Pantheon Art Cinema in Nicosia.
For the third year in a row, the festival’s Artists Committee, composed of Andonis Florides (Film director/writer), Costantinos Sarkas (journalist) and Dr Costas Costantinides(Academic), have the responsibility of selecting the films and compiling the screening programme.
The Artistic Committee made their selection ”to contribute to the development, promotion and mobility of the art of film making in Cyprus and the broader region, to host the work of filmmakers from across the world and introduce them to the public of Cyprus, and to serve as a central meeting point of filmmaking in the three continents that surround Cyprus.”
For the first time this year, there will be a separate competition section titled `Glocal (global And local) images` which has been very well received by filmmakers from around the world.
“The final selection includes nine films from seven countries, with an emphasis on works which promote cinema as an art form but also as a tool for intercultural dialogue,” the organiser said.
All the films taking part in the festival’s competition section will be reviewed by an international three-member jury, in charge of awarding the Best Film Award(accompanied by a monetary prize of euro3.000-sponsored by Event pro).
