The island’s varied scenic beauty unfolds on two mountain chains, the Kyrenia Mountains in the north and the heavily wooded Troodos range in the southwest, in the fertile Mesaoria Plain between them, and along a changing coastline of nearly 800 km.
The island’s location, varied regions and mild climate favour a rich and abundant flora, not all of which has been researched. More than 1800 wild plants are indigenous here, including 40 species of orchid alone
Mediterranean forests testify to an eco system that has survived over centuries. Still to be found here are rare reptiles, such as the Hardun Lizard, the nocturnal chameleon and the sea turtles like the Caretta which come ashore to lay their eggs.

To maintain this heritage of flora and fauna, government has initiated nature conservation and animal protection projects.
