More Cypriots To Holiday Abroad
Travel agents expect a 5% increase in Cypriots’trips aboard in 2010, based on data for the first three months of the year.
The upward trend in outbound tourism is the result of low prices offered for holiday packages by travel agents and tour operators, said Victor Mantovani.
The main destinations preferred by Cypriot travellers continue to be Greece, the UK and Russia.
Mantovani was cautiously optimistic that incoming traffic will see a slight increase this year, provided that prices are kept at value for money levels. There is a need for targeted promotion and advertising rather than general advertising in expensive channels which is standard practice for Cyprus , he said.
“We have been facing the same problems in Cyprus tourism since 2001, with Cyprus still being an expensive destination.
Today tourists are complaining of high prices in cafeterias and for drinks and they tend to prefer halfboard packages for this reason which are much cheaper.
Tourists are afraid to go to a cafeteria or to go out for a drink while in Cyprus,” Mantovani said.
Cyprus has become very expensive when it comes to going out and for this reason more and more Cypriots also prefer to travel aboard for their holidays and shopping
