A Nature’s Paradise
Formerly known as Trikomo(tree hills), the town of Yeni Iskele is actually established on top three hills.
Not known when was it established it, this settlements is 18 kilometres north to Famagusta. Yeni Iskele district is quite busy from tourism point of view. Besides many tourism investments around, Monarga Pass, also known as Iskele Pass (Boghas) is almost engaged in a race
There are many historical works in Yeni Iskele, one of the main places to visit is the Iskele Icon Museum, which displays antiquities and works that hade been saved from findings. Surrounding of Yeni Iskele are rich in historical works. The most magnificient of all is the Kantara Castle on the Kantara Hill to the east of the Five Finger Mountain range , situated to the north of Yeni Iskele. It is possible to get an overview of the entire northern coastline and the Karpaz Peninsula from the castle, which is 1000 metres above the sea level. The castle had served a defense stronghold against pirate raids and a good shelter; nowadays it offers fine opportunities for mountain hiking.
Flora and a fauna of the Karpas peninsula, which is part of Yeni Iskele district, are the richest in
Cyprus . Karpas region is well known for it is virgin nature and splendid beaches. Golden beach, one of the ten finest and longest beaches in the world, stretches for 3,5 kilometres with it is golden sand. Yet another important historical building in the region is the Apostle Andreas Monastery. The monastery houses numerous religious relics and a holy fountain.
Panagia Thedokou Church (Yeni Iskele Icon Museum), Ayios Yakovas Church in Yeni Iskele , Panagia Kyra (Sazl k y Village) , and Panagia Kanakaria (bolta_l_ village) are the Byzantine Churces in the area, Aphendrika(churches of St. George, Panagia Chrysiotissa and Panagia Asomatos),Ay. Tria Basilica and Ayios Philon Church asre famous with their floor mosaics.
Another famous figure of Karpaz is sea turtles.Various measures have been taken to protect the sea turtles,particulary Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas species that lay eggs along the Golden Beach
Yet another feature that has rendered the Karpaz region famous particularly in the recent years idle donkeys that live in the region.These animals that have become commonly known as `free donkeys` have benn taken under protection in the recent years.
