New deal to bring 30,000 tourists to Northern Cyprus

A deal has been signed to fly more than 30,000 tourists to Northern  Cyprus in the next 12 months.

The tourism, Environment and Culture Ministry and Northern Travel and Akmina Travel Club put pen to paper on Friday.

They have pledged to fly tourists from mainland Europe using Tailwind Airlines, to North Cyprus up to April 1, 2012.

The deal had already been agreed and Tailwind’s first flight, from Berlin’s Tegel Airport, touched down at Ercan Airport earlier this month.

The holidaymakers will be staying at a range of hotels across North Cyprus, including the Cratos Premium, Noah’s Ark in Bafra,  Kaya Artemis, Acapulco holidays Resort, Club Lapethos in Lapta , Top Set Hotel Kyrenia and Mercure Hotel(North Cyprus Hotels Guide).

Dervis Abidin , owner of Akmina , said:”we will be bringing tourists every Monday from Germany, Holland, Poland and Italy, taking advantage of European reluctance to visit Egypt and Tunisia this year.”

Erhan Ozerden ,of Northern Travel based in Karakum, said: “we have signed a year’s agreement with Turkey’s Tailwind Airlines, who work with some of the world’s most prestigious charter operators.

“Eight planes have already brought tourists, mostly from Germany and Italy. We plan four charters a week on Fridays, Sundays and Mondays and anticipate visitors from France, Belgium and Austria for the off-season, from September, our busiest time.”

Mr Ozerden was due to fly off to a tourism fair in Baku, Azerbaijan, this week, where he hopes to drum up more customers for Northern Cyprus.

He said that his company had managed to attract Italian Tourists to the island for the past four years, adding: “Greek Cypriot pressure has not had any effect.

Last year, the Italian parliament decreed that their citizens were free to choose where they wished to take their holidays and that no-one had the right to interfere.”

Tourism, Environment and Culture Minister Unal Ustel said that Northern Cyprus Tourism Year had  started in Turkey and that these chartered flights had started with subsidies provided by the  Turkish Embassy.
