Seven days of tourism and cultural events mounted by Kyrenia(Girne) Municipality anf Girne American University (GAU) began yesterday in the town’s first festival themed on knowledge and sustainable tourism.
Each day has been named after one of the island’s endemic wild flowers. The event began with a debate at GAU’s millennium Hall on the impact of tourism on the community.
Today, Orchis Anatolica Day, begins with a student parade at 2pm, boasting flags and national dress from up to 40 countries, following a route along the main Ziya Rizki Avenue, which be closed for an hour.
The parade will leave the Tourism Park, near Niazi’s Takeaway, and head to Girne Municipality offices. Concerts and surprises are on the agenda from 3.30pm with sales and window dressing competition at the Ziya Rizki shops from 4pm.
Action moves to the old harbour at 6pm for a cocktail competition and a “Where is the Best Entertainment?” contest.
Tomorrow, Anomone Coronaria Day, offers a Cypriot culture evening at Girne Castle from 6pm, with folk dancing and presentations of a henna night and wedding.
Monday see the judging of a National School Tourism Poster competition at the university at noon and the closing day for submission of school projects in a competition to develop sustainable tourism. The winning team will present its project at the London 2011 world tourism market.
A sports day runs from 9.30am to 2pm at GAU on Tuesday and on Wednesday the school hosts a photography exhibition and competition from noon until 3pm at the Spectrum Congress Hall.
The festival’s closing day, Thursday, sees a ceremony and awards at 3pm at the Spectrum Congress Hall at GAU.
Ersan Kelesoglu, head of the TRNC Travel Agents’Union (KITSAB), said: “it looks to be a very enjoyable week.
“In order to showcase our culture and traditions, we need good infrastructure, education and qualified personnel.”
