But new transport system and traffic management system to be introduced in stages.

A  Comprehensive mobility plan for Nicosia under consideration by the communications and Works Ministry will be implemented in stages with a view to being completed by 2020.

Forming part of the ministry’s drive for a new public transport system  the plan provides amongs other things for traffic management in the town centre, including turning a number of main thoroughfares into one-way streets, a public transport network and bicycle lanes.

Tram lines are thrown in for future consideration.

The ministry this week presented it is study so far to local municipalities  and the public in order to solicit their response at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre.

Ministery Senior Official Michalis Lambrinos said the processing of the plan began in February 2009 and is now entering it is final fourth stage”it will start being implemented from the day it is finalised through to 2020” he told the Cyprus weekly, adding that certain provisions should be made in next year’s government budget to cover priorities.

These include road infrastructure so as to make possible the introduction of new one-way streets, as well as new parking arrangements.

Lambrinos cited as an example Kallipoleos Avenue, which needs to be upgraded with the construction of pavements and other features.

Other thoroughfares earmarked for one-way streets include Makarios Avenue, Kyriakou Matsi, and a section of Demosthenes Severis Avenue. In most cases, the new one-way streets will be combined with bus lines.

Regarding parking arrangements, Lambrinos said there will be an emphasis on creating more short-stay parking places will be made including fees.

He noted that the plan aimed to achieve a more rational use of the road network, enhancing public transport and mobility for cyclists and pedestrians ,without overlooking the fact the private car will continue to be one of the main means of getting around.

The various traffic options have been evaluated using models presented to the programme steering committee, in which are represented all government services involved and local municipalities through the Nicosia Mayor.

The plan has to provide support to the present and future development of land usage, while at the same time protecting the town centres and traditional architecture against the negative consequences of excessive private car use.
