Cyprus Tourism has benefited from the turmoil gripping North African countries, with summer bookings up 10-12%.
The President of the Cyprus Travel Agents’ Association (ACTA), Victor Mantovani told, the uprisings in Egypt , Tunisia, and the uncertainly in Morocco were benefiting Mediterranean destinations like Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and Spain.
“At the moment we are seeing an increase of 10%-12% in summer bookings and things look positive. The problems in north African countries have meant other destinations, like Cyprus, are benefiting,” Mantovani said.
He added that arrivals in Cyprus could be negatively affected if the political unrest in nearby Syria intensified, as travellers would probably associate Cyprus with the troubled region.
“But , I believe Cyprus Tourism will not be affected as things stand in Syria at the moment,” Mantovani said.
When it comes to outgoing traffic, Cypriot travellers are rather concerned with the political unrest in Syria and Egypt and are waiting for things to calm down before they travel to popular destinations like Sharm El Sheik and Latakia.
Cruises from Cyprus to Syria and Egypt are not affected yet as itineraries start in June, Michalis Maratheftis of Louis Cruises told this newspaper.
A spokesman for Salamis Cruises said the company’s cruise programme begins on May 27 and Egypt is not included this year because of reduced demand before the uprisings there.
