Church Flower Festival Has 20 Floral Displays
One of Paphos’ best-loved church events is taking place from Wednesday to Friday next week at Ayia Kyriaki in Kato Paphos.
Open to people of all backgrounds and creeds, the 2010 Flower Festival is based around the theme of `Songs of Praise` with more than 20 flower arrangements illustrating the idea.
“We come up with a theme each year through brainstorming, then voting.”
“The flower arrangers have worked really hard this year. There are some splendid displays.”
Now in its seventh year, the festival is a collaboration between the Anglican Church of Paphos and the Latin Catholic Church. The festival will have an array of displays depicting a particular hymn.
Many of those chosen are old favourites including `We Plough the Fields and Scatter`, “The lord’s my Shepherd’ and `Eternal Father Strong to Save`.
More modern compositions have also been included, “The World is Full of Smelly Feet` being one.
“This year the children of the parishes are taking an active part in the festival for the first time. Two of the displays will be their own handiwork,” Mc Neeney explained.
“Someone suggested that we get the children involved and they seem to have enjoyed it. One of our flower arrangers has overseen them.”
`Praise`, the children’s group from the Anglican Church, have chosen one of their favourite hymns `One More Step Along the World I Go` whilst the children from `La Souris Verte`, the Catholic Nursery at Mesa Chorio, are portraying `Away in a Manager`.
In addition to local interest, the festival has attracted thousands of visitors of all nationalities, many of whom book their holidays from year to year to coincide with the event.
“We have people asking when the following year’s festival will take place so they can visit Paphos at the same time because they enjoy it so much,” Mc Neeney said.
“A few have been really disappointed if they have missed it.”
Admission to the three day festival is free but there is a euro2 charge for programmes, which are printed in English, Greek and German.
“You really need a programme to make sense of what you are looking at. All proceeds go to local charities.”
Further funds will be raised for local concerns through retiring collections at concerts held each evening at the church at 6pm.
On Wednesday , David Asater will accompany so prano Pat Hayward in a light-hearted concert of popular music and songs.
On Thursday , Paul Timmons, the newly appointed Musical Director of the Anglican Church, will give an organ recital and on Friday the joint choirs of the Anglican Church will present `An Evening of Music and Verse`.
The 7th Annual Flower Festival runs from Wednesday 21st April to Friday, 23rd April inclusive, and is open from 10pm to 5.30pm.
Refreshments, including light lunches and home-made cream teas, will be available at the Windmill Restaurant and teas and coffees will be served at the Anglican church Hall and St Michael’s Hospice Shop. All venues are within close proximity to the church.
