Paphos Pushes For Arts Faculty
Paphos municipality has set up a special committee consisting of academics and politicians who aim to push for a new arts faculty that would help the local economy.
Paphos has been canvassing the government for the establishment of a university arts campus in the town for several years.
As recently as last year, the Education Ministry said it has no plans to include Paphos in any university expansion plans. But Paphos Municipality is determined for such a school to be located locally.
“Our objective is to open a university art branch here in Paphos, “ municipality education officer, Chrysanthos Savivides, told .
“We have set up a five –member committee comprising ministry officials, first meeting in Nicosia last week. Now we are preparing a report for the government on the viability of Paphos as a location for an arts campus.”
The municipality has already earmarked potential sites for a school . once police operations are transferred to new premises behind the fire station, the current station has been touted as a venue for the campus along with the municipal library and the new youth centre on Gladstonos St.
“Paphos is ideal for an arts faculty.there is already a small school in Lemba and there is a tradition of culture in the town, “Savvides said.
The economy would stand to benefit from a local university faculty too, Savvides said.
“ We project there would be around 300 students at the school. All of those students would need accommodation and would take advantage of local night-life . Also, there would be seminars which would attract visitors from other countries.”
Once university the municipality hoped to collaborate with is TEPAK, the Limassol 0based technology university. The school is set to establish a fine arts faculty but plans are for a local site.
“Our expansion will likely be in the old town area of Limassol,” TEPAK Governing Boards President, Elpida Keravnou, told .
“We are open to collaboration on cultural and technological joint ventures in all areas of Cyprus , particularly Paphos. But our university development will remain in Limassol.”
Savvides said that, once an arts faculty was given the go-ahead, it would be set up within a year of an agreement being signed.
