Red Arrows Aerobatic Air ShowBanned
The Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force aerobatic team, has been banned from staging an air show in Paphos in May.
Paphos Municipality granted permission for the team to perform locally on May 23 after a ban of several years, under the condition that it kept the display to the sea area.
But in a u-turn decision made on Monday, the council decided not to issue a licence for a show.
“the Green Party has threatened to stage a protest over the event on the day which coincides with the Kataklysmos weekend celebrations, “ Paphos Mayor Savvas Vergas said.
When a performance date for the air show was announced three weeks ago, the Green Party protested claiming that it would disturb the peace and damaging to the environment.
Additionally, a recent non-fatal accident during Red Arrow exercises in Crete prompted the party to demand Paphos Municipality reconsider allowing the show.
in a press release, the Green Party described the show as a `silly event of the colonisers` and accused the municipality of `selling off the gignity of the people of Paphos for a few euros`.
“It also ignores the environmental damage, noise, disruption, exhaust fumes and the risks that the show will cause,” the party said in a statement.
The municipality hoped that the show would attract visitors to Paphos but the Greens slammed this saying that the show would only attract `a few personnel from the British Bases`.
Since The Red Arrows’ officials formation in 1965, the team have completed over 4.000 displays in 53 countries. The squad has nearly 90 shows scheduled around the UK and in France, Italy and the Netherlands between May and September this year
