Religious leaders meet in Nicosia-Cyprus

The 11th meeting of the Presidents’ of the Bishops’ Conferences of South East Europe opened  in Nicosia yesterday at the invitation of Cyprus’ Maronite Bishop Youssef Soueif.

The meeting at the Hilton Hotel will focus on pastoral care for young people in view of World  Youth Day in August.

Nine Bishops’ Conferences are represented in the three  day event: Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece Moldova Romania, the SS Cyril, and Methodious International Conference and Turkey.

The meeting will be addressed by Archbishop Chrysostomos, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Fouad Twal, the Apostolic Nuncio Antonio Franco, the representative of the Maronite Patriarchate Guy Noujaim and the Holy See’s Permanent Observer at the council of Europe (COE) Aldo Giordano.

The meetings’ main topic will be introduced by Rev. Eric Jaquinet, in charge of the Youth Section of the Political Council for the Laity and by Rev. Francesco Pierpaoli, director of the John Paul II Centre in Loreto. The event is organised by the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences based in Switzerland.

Thierry Bonaventure, media officer of the Council of European Bishops’ Conferences told :” the meeting is the eleventh of its kind and it is organised in a different country every year.

“This year it will deal with issues related to young people and the approasch of the Church to young people in a specific context where the Roman Catholic Church  is a minority.”
