For millions of years Cyprus has been fortunate enough to have the presently endangered and severely threatened Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) and Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta). Green turtles only nest in Cyprus, Southeast Turkey and very rarely in Israel.
The turtles come ashore between May and August on to the deserted beaches of North Cyprus. Alagadi Beach is now classified as a specially protected area.
