A building with special features, the “Eaved House” is situated in Kutuphane Street of Selmiye District within the walled city of Nicosia. It has been named the “Eaved House” because of the wide eaves, supported by inclined pillars, off the main reception hall projecting into the street. The L-shaped two-storey building encloses a square inner courtyard. Although the construction date is not known, evidence based on the traces found on the front facade and the Gothic arch discovered in the arched gallery on the ground floor during renovation, indicate that  tha date of the construction stretches back to the middle Ages.  The house in Nicosia  ,North Cyprus, which was developed during the Ottoman period by making use of it is middle age remnants bears the typical features of Ottoman residential architecture as  far as planning, construction techniques and building materials are concerned.

The inscription of 1932 above the main entrance indicates that the building went through major repairs  on this  date, and that the main door and the large window with a stone frame found on the front facade of the ground floor date back to this renovation , The house has three rooms on each floor. Access to the first floor is provided by a steep wooden staircase situated  in the arched gallery. The main reception hall on the first floor has been constructed with a fill-in woodn frame technique while the other quarters were built by stone arid mud- bricks. In the course of time, the rooms on the ground floor were partitioned and converted into shops by giving random access to the front. As a result , of static problems that arose from bad usage and due to ignorance in the interventions and extension to the building , the main reception hall had sunk towards the inner courtyard. In 1986, the building was nationalized by the Department of Antiquities and musiums and the renovations that begun in 1994 were completed in 1996. In an attempt to restore the original features of the house, the first phase of the two-phase restoration project, the extensions, which were added later and contained no value were pulled down and removed. The “Eaved  House” has been renovated to serve as cultural and arts centre where persons and institutions involved with the culture and art can display artwork, organize meeting, conferences, and other similar activities. Thus, the quarters on the ground and top floors have been arranged bearing in mind such a purpose  and a catering quarter has been built as a new extension in the south-west corner of the inner courtyard.
