The British government has moved to keep rare Japanese porcelain formerly owned by Princess Diana’s family in the UK.
Culture Minister Ed Vaizey said he was temporarily barring export of the late 17th-century pieces-three lidded jars and two trumpet vases-to allow for a last minute fundraising campaign. Donors have until April to come forward, but the deadline may be extended.
The decorative porcelain, covered in black lacquer and mother of pearl decorations, was previously owned by the Spencer family. It was sold at auction last year to an anonymous buyer for nearly £110.000, but it remains in Britain.
Vaizey acted on a recommendation from government art advisers who judged the pieces to have “outstanding aesthetic importance” to Britain.
