President Demetris Christofias will on April 14 inaugurate the new euro 17 million University of Cyprus Sports Centre, demonstrating the facility’s importance to the national University and the general public.

The uniqueness of the Sports Centre is indisputable .

“Of all university or collegiate campuses in Cyprus this is the first ever facility of its kind”.Profossor Constantinos  Christofides, Vice Rector for  Academic Affairs  said:

“The importance of the sports centre for us is more than obvious. This was one of the first buildings we built on the new campus together with the administration office and the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences”,continued the vice Rector.

The centre’s aim is to integrate sports into the students’ life as an essential part of the programme, and there is a good reason for that, Christofides said:”We would like our students to become team players in their lives after they graduate and sports is one of the best ways to make them team players.

“It will provide the opportunity for our students to be able to take sports courses in a very beautiful and high-standard sports centre”, he said, and there are a considerable number of athletic disciplines one can engage in-football and futsal, volleyball, basketball, tennis and gymnastics are just a few of the long list. All these courses are lead by professional sports instructors for free. Not only the University’s students can benefit from the facility. Its pitches, courts and gyms as well as the assistance of the sports instructors will also be made available for professional coaching for lecturers, staff and Erasmus students.

Christifides added:”Sports in our University is very important. This facility will make us more attractive to all looking elite higher education. It adds class to the campus and takes it to other level.

“This facility gives a chance to start a Sports Academy in the future and add new majors and courses to our programme. The facility accommodates our professional teams that participate in both local and international level.”

Michalis Krashias, Head of Athletics Department told the paper:”The Athletic Programme gives an opportunity to the whole University community to deal with sports.

“Individuals can take part no matter of their needs and abilities. The versatile facilities include a full-size football field, volleyball courts, basketball courts, futsal pitch, beach sports terrain, three tennis courts, weight lifting, martial arts, and aerobic gymnastic and fencing halls, table tennis accommodations and last but not least, squash courts. The indoor basketball/volleyball arena can facilitate up to 2,500 spectators.”

The design of the facility is also an advantage. There are amenities for handicapped people, including ramps and elevators. All pitches and courts can be quickly re-equipped to facilitate all the available sports. A single hall can be transformed from hosting fencing to aerobics to martial arts in a couple of minutes. This way a single pitch or hall can be used with maximum efficiency and productivity.
