Cyprus is about to participate in a national competition with international presence through the involvement of Limassol’s Water Museum.
It has been recognised as the authorised national organiser for Cyprus, in the Stockholm Junior Water prize, a prestigious international award recognised for its long term human and environmental impact.
It was established in 1997 and is an annual competition open to young people between the age of 15 to 20, who have conducted water-related projects focusing on local, regional, national, or global topics of environmental, scientific, social or technological importance. Through this international competition, thousands of young people around the world develop personal interest, under take academic study, and often pursue careers in the water or environmental fields. The competition seeks to raise young individual’ commitment in the common water environment, on local as well as global levels. Each project will be judged using six criteria: its `relevance` both scientifically and overall its relevance to both the environment and society; its methodology;subject knowledge; practical skills; report and presentation. Only projects that have been nominated by the national organiser in each participating country are admissible in the international competition. The Cyprus contest is open to all students between the age of 15 to 20, who are still in secondary high school or its equivalent. Projects can be carried out by an individual student or a group of maximum three students. The entries can originate in natural sciences or social students or from other subjects such as sports, health , art, music, or drama.
International Final is held during the World Water Week in Stockholm. This is an annual event usually falling at the end of August, where people from all over the world congregate to network and share ideas in an open discussion forum.
The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) work with every participating country and helps administrate these activities on behalf of the Stockholm Water Foundation.
There is a major cash prize of USD.5000 and a glass sculpture for the winners, presented by Princess Victoria of Sweden, under whose auspices the competition is held, together with an invitation from the Water Environment Federation to the annual WEFTEC conference in the USA.
