Citrus growers are complaining that the government has left them in the lurch again.

And they have accused Agriculture Minister Zorlu Tore  of  breaking a promise to them that their produce would be sold as soon as possible.

Ali Aybar , president of the Turkish Cypriot Citrus Producers Association, told the star that the government has made a mistake by not prioritising the sector.

He said: “we were producing 40,000 tons of grapefruit, and now production has decreased to 5,000 tons as grapefruit growers have not invested in the sector.

“we were going to be paid 300TL per ton, but on national TV it was announced that we were going to be given 285TL.       “This shows that the minister did not keep his promise.”

Aybar said the lemons were unable to be spld and were left to rot on the trees.

“we accepted for the lemons to be sold  to Cypfruvex, the biggest citrus trading centre in the TRNC at 250TL., with another 50TL to be funded from the ministry , but this promise was not kept as well.

“Citrus growers are in difficulties and we have decided that we will protest about the situation,”he added.

The TRNC’s Potato Growers Union has held its first general assembly meeting for 25 years.

Ahmet Yesilada was elected as chairman of the union after narrowly beating Mehmet Bicen in a vote of members.

Mr Yesilada  said potato growers had been badly affected by embargoes with Turkey the sole export market for growers.

Meanwhile TRNC Finance Minister Ersin Tatar  has visited Incirli, Cayonu and Pile and listened to the problems of the people in the area, and met with potato growers.

He said that in spite of difficulties in the TRNC, production is still continuing, and stressed the importance of their contributions. During his conversation with the potato grovers, the chairman of Beyarmudu Municipality, Ilker Edip, said that be has started to organise the export of potatoes to Istanbul and said that it would encourage more production.

Tatar said that the government had experienced difficulties since they were elected, but said that they would continue to motivate citizens, improve their welfare, and help to create job opportunities for young people.
