Health Committee Chairman Costas Constantinou was doubtful the new target date to introduce the NHS will be met.

“I am afraid to say that the Health Ministry and the Health Insurance Organisation will not be ready to meet this new target, because all the prerequisites will not be ready in time.

There are major issues still pending , like training fanily doctors and rendering hospitals autonomous which is a necessary precondition to implement the NHS.

There is also the issue of reaching a convergence between all finanvial contributors to the scheme,” said Constantinou.

How it works

With the implementation of the NHS, patients will be able to first visit their family doctor in the event of a health problem.

The family doctor will see whether he can deal with the problem or refet it to a specialist doctor of the patient`s choice.

Expenses will be covered by the contributions made to the scheme by everyone. Choosing NHS treatment will be free of charge and optional. Patients choosing to see private doctors will have to pay their own medical expenses or at least part of them.

The official visit to Cyprus of Pope Benedict XVI in June is expected to give a much welcome Paphos , where the Pontif will follow in the footsteps of Saint Paul.

The Representative of the Holy See in Cyprus Father Umberto Barato confirmed that the Pope who will be visiting Cyprus on June 4-6, at the invitation  of  President Christofias will go to Paphos to follow the route of saint paul , and then spend some time in Nicosia .

Mediterranean tour operators are reported to be showing a keen interest in offering organised religious tourism packages for summer 2010.

“The CTO is in contact with the Archbishopric  and other Churches in Cyprus to make the most of the visit of the pope to paphos. He plans to follow in the footsteps of saint paul,” said CTO Director General Phoebe Katsouri.

“ We plan to publish a booklet on this in Italian and Spanish, and we are fully mobilised in cooperation with our embassies in Madrid, Rome and the Vatican, in order to attract a significant number of religious tourists from various markets during the period of the visit of the pope in paphos,”she added.

“Religious tourism is crucial for Cyprus tourism  because it attracts tourists from markets that interest us such as Mediterranean countries and former Soviet Union countries,” said Katsouri.

Cyprus is know as a religious tourism destination because of its proximity to the Holy Land, the large number of religious monuments and large number of faithful.

An international religious tourism conference was staged here.

“We now attract Catholic  pilgrims  from Central and Latin America twice a year and the CTO is laying special emphasis on religious  tourism  ,”she added.

The head of the paphos Tourism Development Company, Nassos Hadjigeorgiou said the organisation was targeting religious tourism in paphos. It planned to discuss steps to be taken in the face of the pope`s  forthcoming  visit  at a meeting  yesterday.

PEACE TALKS IN CYPRUS

Posted under Cyprus News by admin on Friday 19 February 2010 at 1:33 pm

42-16335682Peace Talks Resume Next week

Cyprus leaders will launch four day-long face-to-face sessions between February and March to close gaps on the economy, property and European affairs.

UN-led peace talks will resume on Wednesday , after a break of more than three weeks since the andof intensified negotiations.

The following marathon meetings will be held on March4, 16 and 30 .

However , the Turkish Cypriots are pushing for more meetings in March but said they have  not received a response from the government for such a request.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat is hoping to build up some momentum before the April 18 polis, where he facesan uphill struggle against hardliner Dervis Eroglu.

Talat is touring European capitals-he will be in Madrit next week following his Rome contacts-to garner international support for his peace credentials.

Two rounds of intensified talks in January only focused on power sharing and governance when it was hoped progress would also be made on the economy and EU matters.

The leaders will now revisit these two chapters and the prickly property issue as elections in the north loom.

EU affairs and the economy are considered the easiest of all the chapters where convergence and agreement is possible, but almost 20 meetings on the property have only managed to high light stark differences.

More chapters could be covered if there is time, although this seems unlikely judging by previous meetings.

Both President Christofias and Talat  have spoken to UN  Secretary General Ban Ki-moon of  decision to continue discussions despite the`election`.

Both Christofias and Talat gave their personal commitment to reach a Cyprus settlements as soon as possible during the landmark visit of Ban earlier this month.

The UN chief has warned both leaders that a peace deal “will elude them without a further concentrated push”.

When the intensive talks phase ended the UN announced that significant progress had been made in areas of governance without going into details.

The government has also not  made public Christofias’s proposals on a rotating presidency,  weighted voting and Turkish settlers even though this has caused the coalition to split.

Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou  said the lack of a united front was not the best  situation for Christofias to be negotiating a settlement.

Peace talks were launched amid much optimism and fanfare in September 2008, but the two sides remain divided on the core issues of property, security and territorial adjustments.
