Orites wind farm-Paphos

Posted under Cyprus News by admin on Sunday 8 January 2012 at 11:24 am

Cyprus’first wind park, the Orites in  the Paphos district, was inaugurated in March.

The euro170m renewable energy project, which is capable of producing 8% of the island’s electricity, consists of 41 Vesta V90 2MW turbines, spread over 16km of mountainous terrain.

Its construction is considered a pioneering venture as all previous energy investments on the island have been financed by the public sector.

Aside from being the first private sector power venture on the island it is also the first project to benefit from the new 20 year fixed rate tariff that was approved by the government and the  European Commission.

According to its developers, the 82MW Orites is capable of reducing CO2 emissions by nearly 100,000 tonnes and can meet the annual electricity needs of around 25,000 households on the island, with an output of 120,000 KW of energy each year.

The farm will also contribute significantly to the government target of producing 13% of the island’s electricity from renewable sources by 2020. And it represents  27% of the required wind energy capacity of 300 MW. Financing for the project was secured by British company Platina Partners with the European İnvestment Bank providing 50% of the loan under a conventional project finance structure.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Chairman of DK Wind Supply,  Akis  Ellinas, the inspiration behind the development Orites described wind energy as the only advanced technology ready and able to deliver renewable power on a large scale.’

Limassol to Nicosia Motorway-Cyprus

Posted under Cyprus News by admin on Saturday 7 January 2012 at 11:39 pm

The new three-lane Limassol to Nicosia  motorway system opened in November and has been hailed as  successful in meeting its main aim of easing traffic congestion.

The additional lane which is featured on both stretches of road leading into and out of Nicosia accommodates around 63,000 vehicles daily or 4,000 vehicles per hour.

In the past, the specific stretch of motorway experienced some of the island’s heaviest traffic jams as motorists driving into the island’s capital would frequently bottle-neck within several kilometres of Nicosia. The main artery leading into Nicosia was also reconstructed with the creation of a roundabout near Lastsia. The entire construction project, which took around two  year to be completed cost an estimated euro33m. Speaking during the inauguration ceremony President Demetris Christofias said the creation of modern and safer  highways was a priority for the government as private cars remain   the main mode of transport on the island.

However, while the new motorway offers a lot in terms of road safety,  traffic police are still pleading with motorists to get updated on how to use the three-lane system. Following its launch, police began a media campaign in which they provided the public with announcements on how to use the motorway as well as providing television channels with short films on how to safely drive on the three-lane system.
