Limassol aims to be the 2017 European Capital of Culture-Cyprus

Posted under Culture by admin on Friday 27 May 2011 at 12:35 pm

Limassol took another step in their bid to become the 2017 European Capital of Culture with the official launch of the campaign by Mayor Andreas Christou.

It will be master-minded by well-known cultural event planners and producers, Papadopoulos Schinis, and will see the participation of a high profile and active organizing body which includes experienced foreign members who represented other city bids in their home towns of Sibiu, Romania and Liverpool, England.

Christou was also flanked by all four municipal mayors from Germasogia, Mesa Gitonia, Polemidie and Agios Tychonas, showing a very united and determined front.

Both Cyprus and Denmark have been short-listed by the EU for the 2017 award, so the competition is set to escalate between the other Cyprus cities, Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaca, which will compete against Limassol to deliverthe and present the best programme of cultural events and development.

The first phase of the competition, being accepted in the running and inviting tenders, creating a website and producing the right team to begin the promotional activity, began earlier this year in January and is set to run until October.

The second phase will end in May 2013, when one of the pre-selected cities will be nominated. The successful chosen city will then begin preparations for a year long programme of cultural events and activities.

The prestige for winning the Capital of Culture award is expected to have massive benefits to any city.

Panikos Schinis, partner and founder of Papadopoulos Schinis and winner of the bid said: “It`s a great honour to represented our city in this way, but of course with honour comes responsibility.

“I would be lying if I said there is not a sense of pressure, but we have a fantastic team around us, and together with our Municipality who we meet with twice a week, we are confident we can successfully achieve our aim to win through.”

The European Capital of Culture award has been granted to more than 40 cities since its inception in 1985.

The European Commission manages the title and each year, while the Council of Ministers makes the formal designation, an international panel of cultural experts will assess the proposals according to EU criteria.

The 2011 Capitals of Culture are Turku in Finland and Tallin in Estonia.

Turkish Cypriot meal wows judges

Posted under Culture by admin on Saturday 14 May 2011 at 4:36 pm

A London Cypriot has scooped a 1,000 Sterlin prize after winning Britain`s popular Come Dine With Me Tv show with a traditional Turkish Cypriot menu.

Unemployed florist Zehra Kiazim, 35, from Chingford, is donating her winnings to cancer charity in memory of her mother, who died from the disease.

“I entered the competition because I lost my mother Incilay Kiazim, 58, to cancer three years ago. I want to raise cancer awareness and hope that the money I have raised will help save a person`s life ,” she said.

Newly wed Zehra, known as “Zed”, said she was delighted to win after “so much hard work”, and added that her success had promted ITV1 producers to suggest she might host her own cookery programme.

Come Dine With Me features five contestants who host dinner parties for each other at their homes on consecutive nights and then give scores.

Zehra`s menu, which scored a winning 19 out of a possible 30, featured a meze including humus, cacik, broad beans and hellim, as well as herb sausages and shepherd`s salad, followed by the Turkish sweet “tel kadayif” and ice-cream, Turkish coffee and Turkish delight.

“It looks easy on television after production and editing, but the recording took from 7.30am until 2am,” she said.

“They stop you regularly to change poses and make you stand and pose in a way that is suitable for the camera.”

The show was recorded in January, but the contestants were sworn to secrecy about the result until the screening of the final.

Zehra`s co-star was her seven year old Dachshund, Bentley, who even had his nails painted for the occasion.
