A Nicosia hotel has been ordered to remove 25 monitoring cameras and pay a euro3,000 the island’s Personal Data Commissioner.

Commissioner for Personal Data Yiannos Danielides confirmed that  he had imposed the fine on the Holiday Inn Hotel after it failed to provide convincing justification for the use  of nearly half of its CCTV cameras in and around its premises.

The hotel has been given until today ,Friday, to remove 25 of its 60 cameras, which record footage around the restaurant, bar, conference halls, cafeteria and swimming pool areas.

According to Danielides, a letter was send to the Holiday in  on December 29,2010 requesting that the hotel’s management justify the seemingly excessive number of cameras and reply to his office in writing within three weeks.

Hoteliers lashed for sacking Cypriots

Posted under cyprus hotels by admin on Saturday 11 June 2011 at 5:05 pm

Hoteliers were given a stern dressing down at their own general meeting from President Christofias who accused them of sacking Cypriots for cheaper EU labour.

After talking up to prospects for the tourism industry, the President rounded on hoteliers to admonish such “unacceptable behaviour” which he personally felt `strongly` about.

“I`m referring to the sacking of Cypriots for various reasons and the hiring of mainly workers from the European Union in their place on much lower wages and benefits.”

Since the 2009 recession the dole queues have swelled with hundreds of Cypriot hotel staff made redundant.

Unions claim they are being victimised as hotel owners seek to fly in cheaper labour from other European countries. It is argued these people are exploited because they are not protected by unions or a collective agreement, unlike their Cypriot colleaques.

“I am not against the hiring of EU nationals but to give them lower wages and benefits is absolutely intolerable,” said Christofias.

He told the Cyprus Hotels Association (CHA) 75th annual general meeting that the government always listened favourably to their demands but putting Cypriots out of work was a big mistake.

“We are trying to reduce unemployment, but at the end of the day unemployment is rising. This situation cannot continue.”

Furthermore there was an open threat to hotels that if they kept squeezing Cypriots out then the government would resort to taking the “necessary steps” through parliament to enforce legislation.

The President did not elaborate on the kind of measures he proposed to uphold the principles of equal and fair treatment.

“There cannot be unfair treatment to the detriment of Cypriots, while foreigners are also victimised because they are being hired on very basic salaries and benefits.”

Christofias echoed the argument that others in the sector have raised about the island`s traditional tourism product being `diluted` with foreigners who lack rudimentary Greek language skills and the required training.

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation is also concerned that the island`s famed tradition for hospitality is being compromised as establishments cut costs.

CHA chief Haris Loizides – in a tempered response to the President`s  outburst – cautioned over promoting what might be deemed as protectionism that could leave the government open to claims of racism.

“We must be especially careful in our public positioning so as not to give the right to anyone in the EU to officially accuse Cyprus of encouraging discrimination against legal workers in our country.”

Moreover, he argued the recent minimum wage hike in Cyprus was attracting people from across Europe.

He said that hotels were not deliberately excluding Cypriots but making a perfectly `legal business choice` in who they recruit based on market conditions to ensure the tourism sector remained competitive.

Loizides said creating a `climate of suspicion` was only causing more tension and undermining industrial peace.

“There is no entrepreneur who doesn`t want, above all else, to invest in his country.”

Tourism is one of the island`s largest employers and a key contributor to GDP growth.

Cyprus Hotels hoping for an Easter boost

Posted under cyprus hotels by admin on Friday 22 April 2011 at 9:59 am

Hoteliers are expecting a boost in arrivals from the UK during the Easter Holidays as the Western Easter  this year coincides with the Greek Orthodox Easter and the Royal Wedding in London four  days later on April 29 is a Bank Holiday in Britain.

Cyprus Hotel Association (CHA) director  general Zacharias Ionnides  told: “For many  Brits, it is a unique opportunity to take their summer holidays early and Cyprus is among the destinations  they choose due  to its favourable warm climate and the cirsis in many North African resorts including  many to other Mediterranean destinations including Cyprus.

“It is premature to make indications for the whole of the summer season but April is expected to record a healthy growth  compared to last year, considering that on  April 16 ,2010 the eruption of the Icelandic volcano took place paralysing European skies for a fortnight,” he added. Arrivals from Britain recorded a 20% drop in March 2011.

Outgoing tourism is around 7% to 8% up during the Easter Holidays with Cypriots mainly travelling to Greece, said former president of the of the Cyprus Travel Agents Association (ACTA)

Akis Kelepeshis.

“The economic crisis has affected tourism put people will not stop travelling.

“We will see the effects of the economic downturn in the summer when masses are travelling. Now those who usually travel during Easter will still travel this year and Greece is the most popular destination,” he said.

“there are five charter flights to Corfu,Chios, Rhodes, Crete and Mytillini and Cypriots are travelling there for Easter. Other popular destinations this years are Athens, the Peloponnese, Salonica and Halkidiki,”he added.

Meanwhile, some 500 German travel agents visited Cyprus earlier this month for an educational workshop organised by giant tour operator Thomas Cook.

The German travel agents and a small number of Austria and Swiss travel agents, accompanied by foreign journalist  paid  a seven-day visit to Cyprus and participated in the “Travel Games” aiming to boost team spirit and cooperation.

The project is expected to bring major benefits for Cyprus as a tourist destination since participants had firsthand knowledge of the island and became familiar with Cyprus’ product, Cyprus tourism Organisation (CTO) announcement has said.

This will help them become more effective in promoting packages to Cyprus.

Thomas Cook brings a significant number of holiday makers to the island every year and it is one of main associates of the CTO in Germany.

The German market is a priority market for Cyprus tourism and total of 139,000 German holiday makers visited Cyprus in 2010.
