Cyprus’ legendary hospitality will by the summer be better reflected by Larnaca Airport’s new Heads of State Lounge and Executive Aviation Terminal.

Although news reports this week suggested that the state and airport operators had been scrambling to create a new VIP lounge in time for Pope Benedict XVI’s visit in early June, an industry insider yesterday told The Cyprus Weekly that the plans had been in the pipeline since before the Pope’s visit was announced.

The Council of Ministers is in the coming week expected to formalise a provisional agreement between Hermes Airports and Skylink Services Ltd, a private company with over a decade of VIP passenger handling experience at both Larnaca and Paphos Airports. The industry source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the plans did not involve a VIP lounge as such but rather a combined Heads of State Lounge and Executive Aviation Terminal, to be housed within the old airport building.

An official close to the project, meanwhile, told reports that Skylink will be responsible for renovating the space to presidential standards and creating an area for media statements by dignitaries, a waiting area for reporters and offices for the police , civil aviation and Customs officials. The company will also be expected to provide all VIP services including  maintaining the Lounge and Terminal and transferring VIPs to and from their planes.

NORTH CYPRUS AIR QUALITY MEASURING

flora-faunaEU-backed Stations To Check The Air That We Breathe

The first of four European Union-financed air quality measuring stations was opened in Gazi Magusa this week at a ceremony attended by Tourism  ,Environment and Culture  Minister Hamza Ersan Saner and Allesandro Vizzier from the EU programme Support Office.

The station, in the grounds of the Osman Fazil Polat Pasa Mosque, near the Sakarya roundabout, will measure air pollution as well as wind movement, temperature, radiation and humidity.

Mr Saner explained that four stations were being set up in Lefkosa, Gazi Nagusa, Girne and Alevkayasi and the total coast of the project was 700,000 euros. He said the stations would be run by the TRNC at an annual cost of 100,000 euros.

He pointed out that one of the major pollutants in the TRNC was gases emitted by power plants and , as a result, they would be setting up three more air quality measurement stations at Teknecik and Kalecik.

HEALTH COMMITTEE

Health Committee Chairman Costas Constantinou was doubtful the new target date to introduce the NHS will be met.

“I am afraid to say that the Health Ministry and the Health Insurance Organisation will not be ready to meet this new target, because all the prerequisites will not be ready in time.

There are major issues still pending , like training fanily doctors and rendering hospitals autonomous which is a necessary precondition to implement the NHS.

There is also the issue of reaching a convergence between all finanvial contributors to the scheme,” said Constantinou.

How it works

With the implementation of the NHS, patients will be able to first visit their family doctor in the event of a health problem.

The family doctor will see whether he can deal with the problem or refet it to a specialist doctor of the patient`s choice.

Expenses will be covered by the contributions made to the scheme by everyone. Choosing NHS treatment will be free of charge and optional. Patients choosing to see private doctors will have to pay their own medical expenses or at least part of them.
