Tickets are priced at euro30 per person and, although the event is tomorrow, some places may still be open. Please contact Sharon on 99868512 if you are interested in attending.

The Nicosia Dog Shelter is a registered association for the welfare of dogs.

“Every day dogs and puppies are brought to us. They are either lost or abandoned and are often just the result of an unchecked pregnancy. We work hard to make their lives as pleasant as possible at the shelter. Our main aim  is to find the best homes for them to ensure a long and happy life,” the shelter says on its website.

For funds it relies on the generosity of the public. It has two second hand shops, in Larnaca and Nicosia, which take in donations of clothes and small items of bric a brac no longer needed to sell.

“We offer a vital rescue service in the Nicosia and Larnaca area and can always offer some assistance in other areas. We believe animal welfare is greatly improved through education and encourage people and schools to visit the shelter, which can be arranged by appointment.

Our policy is never to refuse help for any reason. We always have room for one more and most of all, we make a difference.”

Plans for ship sinking for Diving Tourism-Paphos Cyprus

Posted under Events by admin on Friday 18 March 2011 at 11:46 am

An eyesore ship stuck off the coast of Chloraka could become a sight of the past if local tourism authorities succeed in getting permission to sink it in order to create an artificial reef for divers.

The Honduran-flagged Demetrius II cargo vessel ran ashore on March 23, 1998 in rough seas while transporting timber from Greece to Syria  . at the time, the eight crew members were airlifted to safety by the British Military.

Now the  Paphos Tourism Board, Paphos Municipality and the Diving Centre Association are examining the possibility of scuttling the 47-year-old ship to develop marine tourism.

If the marine environment accepts it, an artificial reef can develop into a beautiful  diving spot within months as sea creatures and plants make their homes there. Reefs are also important breeding grounds for fish , as the young can hide there and shelter from predators. Vessels which are deliberately scuttled are cleaned beforehand to prevent pollution of the marine ecosystem.

“We are waiting for environmental and topographical studies on the proposed project and permission from The Fisheries Department . if plans go ahead, the studies, clean up and sinking will cost euro300,000. It would be a year before anything would happen,” a tourism board spokesman told. “Today Paphos is already quite popular as a diving destination and the creation of such a reef will add to the enrichment of marine life and the underwater environment which could mean the improvement of diving tourism.

Meanwhile, The Paphos  Tourism Board has given a nod of approval to the efforts of two tour operators to develop markets for all-year tourism in Cyprus.

Greek company, kavaliero Viajes Travel and handling agent oralia Travel and Tours are building on the success of senior travel which started last October by encouraging visitors of all ages to Paphos with flights to 14 European cities.

Several of the weekly charter flight services to cities in Austria Greece, Spain,Italy Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Poland started this week with a full raft of flights expected to be operating by mid-April.

“The move is very positive for Paphos. All of the flights  are serving Paphos International Airport which is proof that some tour operators and business people recognise local opportunities,”  the sposkesman said.” It won’t save Paphos but will contribute to help the economy. That being said, there is still room for more flights to new and existing markets.”

Cyprus Beach Sports

Posted under Events by admin on Thursday 17 March 2011 at 2:07 pm

For the most part, Cyprus beaches are found close to hotels and are watched over by lifeguards in the summer, making them peaceful and comfortable recreation grounds. The beautiful sandy beaches in small sheltered coves are particularly welcoming to those who are lured by the charm  and  appeal  of Aphrodite’s  island.

The  delightful small rocky coves and beaches provide a quiet and charming spot for a refreshing dip. The best known of these scenic beaches is the rocky coast by Petra tou Romiou-the Rocks of Aphrodite. Private hotel beaches as well as public beaches become very crowded during   peak season. One of the most famous beaches in Cyprus-Agia Napa’s  Nissi Beach- buzzes with activity from morning until night. Tourists remain in beach bars and nearby clubs until the small hours and after a night of partying, head straight for the beach to enjoy a refreshing swim. Named after the nearby island (the word Nissi means “island”), Nissi Beach has consequently been nicknamed the “Cypriot Ibiza”. The beach lures visitors with its clear water and sand, not seen in other parts of south Cyprus. According to legend, the sand was brought here from the Sahara.

Less famous but equally beautiful beaches  can be found in the northern part of Cyprus, in the region of Famagusta (Gazimagusa).

Deckchairs, umbrellas and towels are available for hire, but watch our because in some places the the owners charge exorbitant prices. Many beaches are set up with volleyball courts; you can also have a game of beach ball or Frisbee. Numerous sport centres hire out diving or snorkelling equipment, as well as boats and canoes. Since there is no shortage of daredevils, Cyprus’s beaches also offer bungee jumping, water skiing, water scooters, paragliding and banana rides behind a motorboat.

Watersports in Cyprus

Posted under Guide by admin on Wednesday 16 March 2011 at 11:17 am

The Beaches of Cyprus are fun places for the whole family. Sunbathing , volleyball and all kinds of watersports are available to keep you entertained . the numerous attractions include snorkelling, diving, windsurfing , waterskiing and sailing . sea breezes moderate the high temperatures , and the clear water is ideal for swimming. There is no shortage of places to hire equipment, allowing you to practise even the most ambitious watersports ot take a scuba-diving course.

There is plenty to see underwater, even within a few metres of the shore if you are a beginner at this sport. The shallows teem with tiny fish, sea anenomes and urchins clinging to the rocks .

İf if you’re lucky, you may even see an octopus slither past.

İt’s well worth heading out to the more rocky shores where there  is more to see than  on the sandy bottom. One of the best places for snorkelling is the north coast of the Akamas peninsula, where rocky coves and tiny offshore islands abound in a variety of sealife.

Many hotels hire our snorkelling equipment. You can also buy masks with snorkels  and flippers at local sports shops these do not cost much. İt is prohibited to collect sponges or any archaeological items found on the seabed.

Almost all the beaches run courses for windsurfing. The gentle afternoon breezes may not meet the expectations of the more competitive windsurfers. The best winds blow around the capes between Agia Napa and Protaras, and in the region of Paphos . Kkiteboarding  which involves being towed at high speeds by a giant parachutelike kite , is starting to catch on in Agia Napa.
