Art Larnaca-Cyprus

The annual end of year art show by students of the Cyprus College of Art in Larnaca was opened by politician Dr Vassos Lyssarides, a keen painter who also celebrated his 91st birthday on the same day. The show offered an opportunity to see an impressive array of art.

The exhibition included works by graduating students from Cyprus, Greece, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, the United States, Holland, Iran and elsewhere, who have spent the year studying in Cyprus.

Students who took part in the Painting For Fun courses were also represented. The visually exciting works on display included painting, sculpture, installation and digital.

For those keen to follow an art course, the college is now enrolling for Foundation, Undergraduate and MA courses.

The college is looking to the future and last year Dr Michael Paraskos and the Cyprus College of Art started work to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Caterina Cornaro, the last Venetian Queen of Cyprus.

They intend to set up a new arts and educational institute, the Cornaro Institute, in Cyprus.

The constitution is being formed and the founding members list is growing with exciting names, not only from Cyprus but around the world. It includes people from the world of art, culture, politics, education and more.

The Cornaro family were great patrons of the arts, and commissioned the architect Palladio and painters Titian, Bellini and Tintoretto to work for them. The college considers it appropriate that an art college in Cyprus should honour the Queen of Cyprus by establishing the Cornaro Institute exactly 500 years after her death.

The Cornaro Institute currently exists as a shadow organisation of the Cyprus College of Art. It is being established as an independent trust that will work closely with the Cyprus College of Art to provide art facilities, art education and promote culture in Cyprus. It will also assist in bringing artists to Cyprus and it is hoped to build up an interesting collection of art from around the world. Cyprus has many museums of Cypriot art, but very few galleries or museums show anything else and this is an area that the Cornaro Institute intends to focus on.
