The monastery is dedicated to St.Andrew, the protector of travellers who, it is told, landed covered fresh water with healing properties. The site has become a popular place for pilgrimages.
St.Barnabas Monastery and Icon Museum
The monastery was built close to the site of St.Barnabas tomb. St. Barnabas was stoned to death by the citizens of Salamis to whom he attempted to preach the gospel, and his tomb and monastery are a great religious significance to the Greek Orthodox Church and now houses a museum of icons which depict the events which led to the establishment of the independent Church of Cyprus.
St.George of the Greeks
This was once the Greek Orthodox cathedral of Lefkosa and was built in the fifteenth century AD in Byzantine style.
St.George of the Latins
This early Gothic church, based on St.Chapelle in Paris, was built during the thirteenth century.
Iskele
Iskele(Trikomo) is one of the districts famous with it is unspoilt nature and golden beaches of the Karpaz peninsula . This lovely district with it is rich historical sites as well as it is flora and fauna. The main agricultural produce of the area are artichokes , carob and olives. Fishing and both irrigation and dry farming also contribute to the income of the local population.
Apostolos Andreas Monastery
According to legent St.Andrew was on his way back to Paletine on a ship whose captain was blind in one eye. They put in for water St.Andrew struck the rock where the monastery now stands and gushed spiring the magic properties of which restored the captains sight. The monastery ,which served to accommodate both Moslem and Christian pilgrims, is a relatively recent structure.
