Cyprus Rally closes IRC

This year’s Cyprus Rally saw the most exciting of finishes in what event organizers  described as the best event the island has ever  hosted . going into the final rally event of the 2011 calendar, no fewer than five drivers had the chance to take the IRC title including eventual winner Mikkelsen, defending champion Juho  Hanninen of  Finland, championship  leader Jan Kopecky of the Czech Republic, as well as Belgium’s Thierry Neuville and Freddly Loix.  This year saw the Cyprus Rally also move from ‘ts usual base of Limassol to the popular west coast resort town of Paphos for the first time and also featured the Cyprus Golden Stage Rally- a new race launched in Cyprus in 2010 which sees teams battling it out for their share of a euro 150,000 prize fund.  This year’s Cyprus Rally was also transmitted live on  Eurosport presenting Cyprus Tourism Organisation(CTO) officials the chance to put the island on the map ahead of the winter and summer holiday periods. Among the Cypriot entries , a consistent drive from former Cyprus Rally winner Nicos Thomas saw him build a healthy  lead over his rivals, but his luck didn’t hold and Doros Loucaides ended the event the highest positioned Cypriot driver. Michalis Posidias left the event as the new leader of the local championship.
