CYPRUS TURKISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

`More time` plea over EU quality mark

Business chiefs have flown to Brussels to ask for more time to ensure TRNC products can meet the requirements of the CE Mark.

Firms exporting items to Europe from North Cyprus have been given until July to come into line with the quality mark.

This is a Europe-wide deadline for countries wishing to take advantage of the CE Marked products within the EU.

But the Cyprus Turkish Chamber of Commerce is concerned that businesses keen to develop export links with Europe through the Green Line trade agreement will not be able to meet the standards that quickly.

İt is also asking for an expansion of the Green Line  Regulation so more products can be exported to Europe from North Cyprus. Currently products are sold across the Green Line to South Cyprus so they can be badged Cypriot products.

“The Greek Cypriots were granted eight years to adapt to the standards (of the CE Mark),” said Sami Tasarkan, Chamber spokesman.”We need time.Six months is not enough for us.”

Chamber president Gunay Cerkez, who led the delegation which flew to Brussels on Monday, favours the adoption of the CE Mark, which he says will benefit everone.

“these standare necessary for our people and our consumers,” he said. He also wants to see the CE Mark on imports into North Cyprus.

The Chamber of Commerce delegation was due to meet with officials from the European Commission,  European Parliament , TRNC and Turkish representatives in Brussels, and officials from the Turkish Desk of the European Commission.
