Film Technology Flying high in Paphos-Cyprus

A peculiar sight stopped tourists and locals alike in their tracks in Paphos harbour recently when a cinema crew filmed an unusual dining scene metres above the remains of the old fort.

Future Generation Productions were filming part of a new thriller action movie by independent director, George Voulgaris on a dining table hanging above the remnants af ancient fortifications at the far end of the harbour.

“The scene is for a move called Diexodus, the sequel to Exodus which won an award in the 2007 Thessaloniki Film Festival,” producer Charalambos Mavromatis told .

“In the scene we are filming in Paphos a beautiful and wealthy woman is trying to get information from a businessman-godfather type character who is a key character in the movie.”

Two actors and several crew were strapped into a hanging `Sky Table` provided by GMP Katsambas Ltd Dinner in the Sky company.

Such a table holds up to 22 people and can be elevated up to 50m. The novelty apparatus is usually used for special occasions.

Not only was the scene being shot in mid air, the director was overseeing the scene and instructing crew and actors from Athens.

“George is unable to be in Cyprus at the moment so he is directing from his house in Athens via Skype and a special Vodafone application,” Mavromatis said. “He can see everything directly via his laptop and make decisions as though he was on set. We are trying to show that with modern technology, you can do anything.”

Shooting on the film, about protagonist Robert helping a woman to destroy the plans of a Cyprus mafia boss, will be completed at the end of this month.

The production will then be edited in time for prevention at several European film festivals including the Cyprus International Film Festival.

“We started filming in January,” Mavromatis explained. “We want to make a good film, but also show the beauty of Cyprus. This scene in Paphos shows the Mediaeval fort in the background. We have also filmed at Finikoudes in Larnaca, the old Venetian bridges and some beautiful shots in Limassol.”

The cordoned off filming area attracted curious passers-by, who wanted to know what a table was doing hanging above the harbour.

“I want to know when the film will be coming out. It is an unusual thing to see,” Australian visitor, Margaret Staib, told . “I wouldn`t like to be up there myself, though.”
