Golfers on The Ball For Busy Years Courtesy of Cyprus Today
North Cyprus golfers are looking forward to a busy spring at Esentepe’s Korineum Golf And Country Club and the CMC Golf Club, in Yesilyurt,east of Lefke.
The year teed off with the first tournament of the North Cyprus Golf League at the Korineum Golf and Country Club on January 10. That was followed by the Tempur open at CMC Golf Course on January 17,
North Cyprus Golf Federation board member Targuc Ozen, said seven league tournaments had been organised this year with around 200 members likely to compete. He said:”The points collected by the competitors will determine the ranking for this year. The first four golfers at the end of the season will be taken to an international tournament at a venue not yet decided.
This month there will be three further tournaments-the VW open at CMC on February 21 and The Federation Tournament, an February 28, which will be held simultaneously on both North Cyprus courses.
One tournament has been organised exclusively by Korineum Golf and Country Club, the Besparmak Trophy , to be held on February 21.
The season will continue with three tournaments in March. The first of those is the Cengiz Topel Cup, at CMC on March7.
A fortnight later another tournament, under the name Ilkay Laboratory, will be held again at CMC.
The last tournament in March is the Federation League, held on both golf courses simultaneously on March 28.
The busiest months of the golfing year will be April and May , with each having five tournaments.
In June there will be three tournament , while the final tournament of the year, the Lefke Kurtulus Cup, will take place at CMC on August 15.
The programme looks busy, but george Offord, from JK’s Golf Society, in Lapta, says there is scope for more courses in North Cyprus, especially in the Lapta and Alsancak ares.
The society has around 25 core members who use five or six courses in the North and the South of the island.
“Most of our members are also members of the CMC Golf Club. However, the government should provide more funds to the sport to develop the existing courses and to establish new ones”, he said
