NICOSIA MUNICIPALITY TO SET UP ADVICE BUREAU
Nicosia residents will soon benefit from an Advice Bureau being set up at the Municipality’s Multifunctional Foundation.
Speaking to the Cyprus Weekly yesterday, Foundation official Stavroula Georgopoulou said the Bureay would start dispensing advice from March 1, when experts including psychologists and speech therapists would be available to offer their services for free.
Georgopoulou said that , at this stage, the Bureau would be able to assist only people who live within the jurisdiction of Nicosia Munipility.
“They will be able to make appointments with experts, meeting with them on a one to one basis. Later , we hope to also have support groups for people facing the same difficulties” she said.
The Bureau will also be working closely with government services to be able to refer people to them for more specialised help.
“who will be offering the first hand of assistance and be able to let people know how they can get more help.
“if there is problem involving family violence, for example, we will also be able to refer them to the relevant body for more specialised assistance.”
The Bureau has already started organising public lectures on health and social issues. Last night, the talk was on heart disease and the next one, on Thursday, February 18 , will be on diabetes.
“The lectures take place from 6.30-8pm. We will be having lectures every second Thursday until June 17,” Georgopoulou said. These are being organised in cooperation with the University of Nicosia, the Research Bureau for Behaviour and Social Issues(RUBSI) and the European Commission representation in Nicosia. The lectures are given in Greek.
Georgopoulou said that she and Programme Coordinator Marios Argyrou hoped that the initiative would be embraced by the public.
“We have been trying to make the residents of within and out of the walls Nicosia more aware about how we will be able to help them”
