The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has said that it will return to Paphos from May after suspending its local concerts because of poor performance space.
“We are happy to announce that the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will be performing at Markideion in Paphos as from May 2011,” the body said in correspondence to fans.
In January, the orchestra announced that it would not perform in Paphos owing to what it described as the inadequate facilities and questionable health and safety standards at the Municipal Markideion Theatre.
The move disappointed the local audience, the biggest in Cyprus, and came at a bad time for Paphos Municipality just weeks after launching its official application for European Capital of Culture in 2017.
Paphos is a very loyal audience base. We don’t like pulling out like this, but we have been asking the Municipality to do something for years and we want to give good concert in a properly-heated venue with basic hygiene standards,” a spokesperson said following the original announcement.
The council cultural services told that it planned to address the immediate concerns about the theatre space by installing portable structures on land adjacent to the venue in order to create more dressing room space.
In the meantime, the orchestra will be giving two Easter concerets in collaboration with the Greek ERT Choir, at Strovolos Municipal Theatre, Nicosia with Rossini’s Stabat Matter on 12 and 13 April.
As the permanent improvements to the Markideion, which is comanaged by Paphos Municipality and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), the situation is less certain.
“Time are difficult and there is nothing in the 2011 budget to cover any building funds for the theatre. Nobody denies that it needs work, but the means are not presently there, “ THOC Director Varnavas Kyriazis told .
In order for the Paphos to Nicosia transport to go ahead, the orchestra needs a minimum of 40 person responses.
