Cyprus has a land area spanning 9251 square kilometres and is on the east of the Mediterranean. It`s only 70 km from Turkey, 110 km away from Syria and 420 km from Egypt. North Cyprus is around one-third of the area of the entire island. The North of the island is inhabited by Turkish Cypriots and the South by Greek Cypriots. The population of North Cyprus is around 200 thousand. Nicosia is the capital city of the North and other main cities include Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazi-magusa), Morphou (Guzelyurt) and Trikomo (Yeni Iskele). Five Finger Mountain Ranges stretches all along the coastline in the North of the island and is rich in term of flora and fauna.
The Range has also got tall pine and cypress forests. At an altitude of 1017 meters, Selvilitepe is the highest point of the mountain range. The Mountain Range is named after a hill in the heart of the island, which looks like 5 fingers of a man. The North of the island has numerous rivers that fill up and rise with the rainfall. The exhibition aims to show visitors the artistic routes taken by the featured neo-Hellenic artists. The works reflect the art the time as well as the personal style of each painter, the organisers said. According to art historian and critic Katerina Schoina, the 19th century was a particularly significant time for Greek painters:" Artists turned to the familiarity of post-Byzantine and folkcentred art, starting in Munich where the majority studied, coming into contact with the academic Neo-classical influence there." Minor roads and forest roads are still largely unsurfaced but in good to fair condition .Appropriate care should be taken when using these roads, especially during wet weather. Visitors wishing to bring their car to Cyprus can do so , for a period up to 3 month provided the car has a valid registration licence of it is country of origin. In the 7th century, Salamis, being the most important city in Cyprus and the whole of the Eastern Mediterranean, was set ablaze and destroyed by Arab raiders. The inhabitants of Salamis fled and migrated to Famagusta and therefore expanded the city. Famagusta was later transformed into one of the richest cities in Christendom in the late 13th century, when a second human flood took place and Christian refugees inhabited the city after the failure of Acre in Palestine during the Crusaders. Genoesen seized the city in 1372 and were followed in 1489 by the Venetians. It later fell to the Turks in 1571 after a one year siege.more...

In recent years Limassol has seen huge tourist development along the wide and noisy approach road on a stretch of coast without good beaches. It is a modern town but doesn't lack atmosphere and has good shopping , nightlife and restaurants. The carnival in spring and the wine festival in early September are particularly lively times. The sights of Limassol are best explored on foot. The main historical sight is the castle and medieval museum.
