BAN INAUGURATES LEDRA STREET STABILISATION WORK
During his visit UN Secretary General Ban Ki –moon inaugurated the Ledra Street stabilisation work to restore and make safe the surrounding buildings.
The Secretary General said it was a great honour for him to be at the crossing almost two years after it was opened by the two leaders in April 2008.
Welcoming the second phase of the Ledra Street crossing stabilisation work, he said he looks forward to the day when the whole area will be opened and restored so that inhabitants of Nicosia can again enjoy this area as a busy centre of daily life.
“This crossing has become the symbol of the two leaders to heal division and to work together towards a common future,” he said.
Ban thanked the bi -communal initiative of the Nicosia Master Plan for preparing and executing the project.
He thanked senior aides Ozdil Nami and George Iacovou, Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou, her Turkish Cypriot counterpart Cemal Bulutogullari , the UNDP partnership for Future Programme for implementing and coordinating the scheme and the European Union represented by Leopold Maurer for funding the project.
Opening the Ledra Street crossing was a confidence building measure aimed at facilitating people movement across the divide.
Since then, efforts are underway to restore derelict houses in the vicinity and make them safe for pedestrians crossing the pedestrianised zone.
