Upgrade for Four walking trails-Cyprus

Four of Cyprus ‘ main walking trails will be fully upgraded under a new project that got underway  in 2011 aiming to enrich tourism here and in a Greek  islands of Crete  and Chios.

The project is titled’ Enrichment of tourism structures and services and the re-organisation of the management and promotion services of the walking trails in island regions 14 walkers.

It is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund(80%) and by national resources (20%).

Completion will take 22 months at the cost of euro740,000.

The Forestry Department, the regional Lasithio unit of Crete and the regional Chios unit are taking part.

For Cyprus , the project includes the creation of modern, model plans and technical specifications as well as marking the walking trails.

It also entails  pilot upgrading for four walking trails, Aphrodite  in the Akamas peninsula, Calodonia and Persephone  in the Troodos Mountains and Ayii Anargyri at Cape Greco.

There will also be tourist guides and leaflets for the four walking trails and Forestry Department employees will be trained to give visitors tours.

The project is expected to lead to the effective management of the walking trails, while a number of new jobs will be created during  its preparation.
